January is traditionally a depressing month, and a quick glance in any bookshop shows a whole host of self-help books targeted at anyone feeling down and going for a ‘new year, new you’. However this year, why not try a literary alternative? A whole different way to achieve self-improvement and become a ‘new you’: Reading.

Dry January? You might as well be speaking Martian. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of maintaining a healthy regime but in the most grisly month of the year, why on earth would we strip away the simple comfort of a glass of vino while relaxing in the evening after work? Rather than abstain totally for one month, how about sipping less often but selecting superb bottles of wine throughout the year? You won't be spending any more but you'll be reveling in sheer deliciousness and trimming the intake admirably.

Hipflasks are portable generators, packed with flavour and a dynamo of warming liquor to sip when the weather starts to bite. Fortified wines are a tremendous source to fill up from and are among the most generously flavoured and glowing sips in the entire canon of vinography… which incidentally is a word that I have never used before and was inspired entirely by the bronze glass of tawny port winking at me from across the table.
