The classics of wine usually encompass the rich earthy rumble of a fine aged Bordeaux, the scented ethereal delicacy of a Burgundian Pinot Noir or the bass drum boom of a mighty Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The classics, almost invariably begin with a list of wonderful wines from France. Nothing wrong with that, I doff my chapeau most mornings to the fine heritage of French wine from the zingers of Chablis and Champagne to the spicy reds of the Rhône - in fact it was a humble white French wine made in the Languedoc by the Lurton Brothers over twenty years ago that first piqued my palate and got me interested in wine.

Has it really been 20 years!? It seems like only yesterday when we opened our very first hotel, Hotel du Vin Winchester, in 1994. 22nd November 2014, marked 20 years to the day when we welcomed our first guests with co-founders Gerard Basset and Robin Hutson at the helm as they turned their vision into a reality.

As we continue to enjoy our partnership with Random House, we are inspired this month by crime novels. Every July, Harrogate plays host to a variety of criminal activity. It can be frightening, gory and shocking but is always entertaining. The Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival has become a highlight of the literary calendar and this year looked set to bring the very best of international crime writing to Harrogate.

Here’s to the start of the British social calendar where golden moments abound at Henley, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon and Lord’s stretching across the summer. For big social occasions such as these, or indeed when you’re at home entertaining with an informal Sunday barbecue or a full-on summer party, a great way to lavish your nearest and dearest with bottled splendor is with excellent wines poured from larger format bottles.
