Dry January? You might as well be speaking Martian. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of maintaining a healthy regime but in the most grisly month of the year, why on earth would we strip away the simple comfort of a glass of vino while relaxing in the evening after work? Rather than abstain totally for one month, how about sipping less often but selecting superb bottles of wine throughout the year? You won't be spending any more but you'll be reveling in sheer deliciousness and trimming the intake admirably.

Hipflasks are portable generators, packed with flavour and a dynamo of warming liquor to sip when the weather starts to bite. Fortified wines are a tremendous source to fill up from and are among the most generously flavoured and glowing sips in the entire canon of vinography… which incidentally is a word that I have never used before and was inspired entirely by the bronze glass of tawny port winking at me from across the table.

While many were nursing their roast dinner over indulgences and watching Downton Abbey, on Sunday 3rd November, Hotel du Vin Birmingham hosted the wonderfully charismatic Olly Smith for the first in a series of wine pairing dinners. Guests tucked into five sumptuous courses with perfectly matched wines with each course, chosen by Olly from the hotel’s own wine list.

What makes a classic wine? Certain wines, places, grapes and producers have names that resonate with more than just hardcore wine fans, much like the greatest hits of a band with a long career span. I'm not suggesting for one moment that wine is the drinks equivalent of the Bee Gees, but just as most of us will know 'Night Fever', not all of us will have heard of 'Lemons Never Forget', just as names like Rioja are world famous where Roero is perhaps less familiar. Why?
