Chris Thompson’s story shows us how far you can come with the right coaching, development and opportunity.
Whilst working in bars to carry me through University I caught the hospitality bug and couldn’t see myself doing anything else...I was hooked! After time in bars I moved in to an independent hotel to gain an understanding of restaurants. I remember the first few weeks there, the wine list was extensive and the guests loved to talk about the wines but I didn’t know the difference between a pinot grigio or a pinot noir so I took a weeks holiday from work and went on my WSET, this course set me on an amazing journey with wine and while I have since developed a huge passion for all beverages wine is what really gets my juices flowing!
I saw the advert for Brasserie Manager at Malmaison Newcastle and I jumped at the opportunity and never looked back. The people I have met along the way and the culture of development in MALHDV has played a massive part in my success, driving me and pushing me to be my best, giving me the opportunity after a few months to take over the bar whilst developing me to be ready to take DGM in Leeds after 2 years. This development continued and both GMs I worked for at Leeds pushed me and prepared me to be ready to take my first GM role within 4 years of starting as Brasserie Manager. My bosses became my mentors and now I call them my friends, it’s an amazing family to be part of!
