Earlier this month Hotel du Vin Henley presented a very special evening of "Call my Quaff", a classic Hotel du Vin wine dinner with a fun twist. Taking inspiration from the classic TV programme "Call my Bluff", hosts from wine suppliers Bibendum each described a wine to guests, but only one was telling the truth. Guests had to match the wine in their glass to the correct description to win.

Our host for the evening was Nadia from Bibendum, a wine buff if there ever was one. At the beginning of the night 10 guests were welcomed with Champagne and canapes in the snug area of Hotel du Vin Henley.

The evening was fun and relaxed, as Nadia introduced all of us eager novices to lesser known grapes and tasting techniques. We began with pea and mint soup with fregola, pine nuts and crème fraiche with a Spanish Picpoul.

Next we were treated to grilled duck breast, served perfectly pink, on a bed of mixed leaves, orange gel with pomegranate and grapefruit dressing. The main event was a delicious pan friend sea bass served with champ mash, samphire, clams and shallot cream sauce, complimented by a New Zealand Viognier.

For dessert we were treated to blackberry cheesecake with raspberry sorbet on a bed of chocolate shavings with a strawberry sauce, paired with a robust Pinot Noir.

The evening ended with a selection of British cheeses including a bold Shropshire Blue, paired with a Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine with honeysuckle notes.
